Fatemeh Gharibi (they/them) is a Ph.D. candidate in Gender, Feminist, and Women’s Studies at York University, Canada-occupied land. Their interdisciplinary research encompasses International Education, Feminist and Sexuality Studies, as well as Theatre and Performance-based Methodologies.
Fatemeh adopts an activist scholarship approach, utilizing research-based theatre to amplify the voices of women, queer, and trans people of colour. In their Ph.D. project, they contribute to the young field of political international students’ studies by focusing on understanding the challenges and joys that LGBTQ+ international students face while navigating activism and political engagement in Canada during a time of rising far-right politics both locally and internationally.
Fatemeh is currently (2024) a doctoral research assistant in three significant research studies: 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada: Improving Livelihood and Social Wellbeing, the first national project on this topic, The Multilingual University Student Experience (MUSE) Project: a multi-site research study, and they recently joined another study, Exploring Strategies to Enhance LGBTQIA+ Migrant College/University Students’ Sense of Belonging & Wellbeing: A Mixed-Method Community Participatory Arts-Based Project.
Additionally, Fatemeh is a teaching assistant at York University. They teach introductory courses on gender and sexuality studies, critical race studies and theatre and performance-based methodologies. They pursue their career goals in research project management, policy analysis and university teaching.
