John recieved a Sylff fellowship in 2018 while studying towards a PhD in psychology at Victoria University of Wellington. In a world plagued by ‘alternative facts’ and ‘fake news’ he hopes his research will improve dialogue around contentious social issues. His studies focus on how people form – and change – attitudes and opinions about publically debated scientific issues like climate change, vaccination and gene editing.
