The “Together in Tohoku” Workshops and Suntory Hall concert were reported in Japan’s leading English-language daily, the Japan Times, on August 30. (Read the story here. )
The workshops and concert brought over 120 middle and high school student wind musicians from tsunami-devastated districts together with fellows from three leading music schools in the global Sylff community.
After coaching the students in Tohoku over three days in mid-August, the Sylff fellows performed a concert in Ishinomaki and joined the students as members of the Michinoku Wind Orchestra for a charity concert at Tokyo’s prestigious Suntory Hall.
Also, read about how the event materialized as a joint project between the Tokyo Foundation and organizations supporting tsunami-affected students here.
A report by Simon Hutchinson, a composer and Sylff fellow who volunteered to serve as a coordinator and interpreter for the event, can be read here.
